Common Causes of Hearing Loss

Herbert Silverstein, MD, FACS president and founder of Silverstein Institute and the Ear Research Foundation, has been consistently recognized since 1979 as one of the 'Best Physicians in the USA.' He has been a leader in otology for more than 25 years, developing surgical and diagnostic procedures, inventing instruments (such as the facial nerve monitor/stimulator), teaching medical students, residents and fellows, and helping people from all walks of life.
Born in Philadelphia, he received his BS degree from Dickinson College (cum laude), and both MS (in physiology) and MD degrees from Temple University Medical School. Before coming to Sarasota in 1973, he served on the teaching staff of Harvard University Medical School, Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary.
He is internationally regarded as a leading authority on Meniere's disease, having received the Prosper Meniere's Society's prestigious Gold Medal Honor Award in 1996 for his contributions to understanding the biochemistry of Meniere's disease and his surgical developments to treat the disease. He has developed a new procedure for otosclerosis, the Laser STAMP (Laser Stapedotomy Minus Prosthesis), which does not require a prosthesis to restore the patient's hearing, and many minimally invasive surgical techniques including the Silverstein MicroWick for treating inner ear disease through the ear canal.
In 1979, Dr. Silverstein founded the Ear Research Foundation. Today, he serves as its president, as well as its Medical Director. An active researcher, Dr. Silverstein is the author of over 240 scientific papers, 81 textbooks, and videos. Among his many honors and accolades are the 2nd Howard P. House Award for Excellence in Ear Surgery, and the 10th Prosper Meniere Society Gold Medal Honor Award. Otitis media con efusión y otitis media aguda

Dr. Med. Mario Jesús Jr. Villegas González, nació el 31 de Julio de 1972 en Monterrey, Nuevo León. Cursó la licenciatura de Médico Cirujano y Partero en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León de 1989 a 1996. Realizó el servicio social en investigación en el Servicio de Gastroenterología del Hospital Universitario “Dr. José Eleuterio González” en 1996-1997, donde posteriormente se integra a la Especialidad de Otorrinolaringología realizando cuatro años de residencia de 1998 al 2002. Al finalizar la especialidad realiza una subespecialidad de dos años (Abril 2002 a Marzo del 2004) como residente en otología, otoneurologia y cirugía de base de cráneo en el Instituto de Otología de García-Ibáñez en Barcelona, España, siendo el primer fellow mexicano certificado por The European Academy of Otology & Neurotology. Durante el periodo comprendido del 2002 al 2004 realiza el Doctorado en Cirugía en el Departamento de Otorrinolaringología del Hospital Vall d`Hebron de la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona con la tesis “Valor de las exploraciones neurotologicas en el diagnostico, localización y seguimiento del los neurinomas del acústico” obteniendo la calificación de Sobresaliente Cum Laude, máxima distinción que otorga la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona a sus doctorados.
Se ha desempeñado como profesor titular de pregrado y posgrado en el Servicio de Otorrinolaringología del al UANL desde el 2004 y ha estado a cargo de la clínica de Otología y Cirugía de Base de Cráneo desde el 2010. Así mismo coordina el Centro Regional para el Estudio y Diagnostico de la Sordera y del Vértigo de la UANL. Ha participado en conferencias y cursos de actualización nacionales e internacionales, obteniendo 4 primeros lugares en los siguientes congresos: Congreso de la Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología (1997), en el XV Congreso Nacional Anual de Investigación Biomédica (1998), y dos primeros lugares en la Federación Mexicana de Otorrinolaringología y Cirugía de Cabeza y Cuello ( 2004 y 2006).
Las áreas de mayor interés en investigación en las que participa son sobre los estudios diagnósticos de los diversos tipos de sorderas y del vértigo, así como en la cirugía de base de cráneo para el tratamiento del colesteatoma y del vértigo.
