The Physiologic Basis of Audiologic Practice

Course Description

This course will review the combined use of Reflectance and/or Immittance, middle ear muscle reflexes, Otoacoustic Emissions, and ABR to differentiate inner from outer hair cell function on each new patient.

Learning Objectives:

• Attendees will learn how to triage patients into streams using physiological rather than behavioral tests.
• Once patients are separated into streams, behavioral tests should be added to create the more familiar audiological analysis, but now the diagnostician will be able to separate inner from outer hair cell contribution and manage the patient accordingly.
• Incongruities between obtained physiology and observed behavior can then be managed more effectively than simply “treating the audiogram.”
